Barrier Systems, Inc. was incorporated in 1984 in California. The business was founded by John W. Duckett based on a single product whose technology was invented in Australia. The technology was that of a moveable barrier (curb) that could be repositioned on the road surface in order to channelize vehicles to provide a flexible configuration of the roadway. The technology was conceptual in nature and had never been reduced to practice. Thus, a great deal of work was required to develop the technology to a point where the product would actually function properly and was marketable. This development required substantial capital resources and personal effort and it was necessary to bring in other investors to fund the development work. This resulted in the formation of the corporation and the development of the basic products that are offered by Barrier Systems, Inc. today.
